The Gospel reading from this past weekend highlights just what Jesus has consistently looked for in a disciple. In the first part of our Gospel reading He seems to set the bar impossibly high when establishing the “criteria” for entering the kingdom of heaven.
But we need to consider the people whom Jesus is talking about. If we read through the Gospels at any length, we know that Jesus often goes after the “scribes and Pharisees”—those who are supposed to be the prime example of following the Law of Moses—because He sees their motivation. The practice of the religious leaders was to follow the letter of Law instead of understanding its spirit. They were always going through the motions in an effort to show off publicly, to say to the world “look how righteous I am!” when the whole point of following God is an effect on the inside, a life change, not an outward change.
The problem with the scribes and Pharisees is that their spiritual practice was superficial. That describes the vast majority of not just Christianity, but of other faith practices as well. We go through the motions as a means of “fire insurance,” not allowing that practice to sink deeper in and motivate our lives in a positive direction.
The call of God is not a call to live superficially; it is a call to go deeper, a call to go beyond the surface and allow the Word to take root and yield harvest.

When it’s not Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Advent, or Christmas, the Catholic religious calendar counts the weeks in “ordinary time” (“ordinary” an attempt at Anglicizing the Latin ‘tempus per annum’ or ‘time through the year,’ numbering the weeks (ordination) when it’s not a particular liturgical season).
The temptation in spiritual life during the “ordinary” times is to go back to being “ordinary” (especially true of those folks we call “Easter/Christmas bonnet people” who only attend their local church at Christmas and Easter).
Who said Ordinary Time had to be “ordinary?”

I’ve been overwhelmed by the response to my post about Vee’s and my current living situation and the related email campaign that I wrote to friends (more or less out of desperation). I feel that I should provide an update on what’s happened since last night, especially since a couple of the donations we received were from people I don’t even know. The word has spread thanks to internet contacts who passed my situation on to others.
This morning I pulled a $430 money order from my PayPal account, the donation total as of that time ($300 of that, by the way, came from just two people; there were about a half-dozen in total). I also received a commitment from my extended family of a month’s rent ($557) to add to this, so in total you’ve provided almost a thousand dollars to help us out. I gave this information to the pro bono attorney (from Bay Area Legal Services—if you’re in need of an attorney and can’t pay for one, they’ve been so helpful to us) to offer to the landlord/management company’s attorney in consideration for giving me more time to keep looking for work, appeal the denial of my unemployment compensation benefits, &c.
The attorney passed the offer on to UDR for their consideration. We didn’t get a response back before business ended today, so we’re spending the weekend on pins and needles waiting for their response. From what our attorney told us, it looks like UDR’s attorney wants to take this money and then have us pay more in a few weeks (hoping that I’ll have a job by then), so we’re not out of the woods yet; we’ll need to keep raising funds.
We also need to raise funds to keep our internet connection going and the power on so I can keep looking for work, so it’s not over yet. I’ve posted the PayPal link again below if you can help us out with a donation.

I’m really not sure how to write this, but I guess the subject says it all. I guess some explanation is in order…
As readers of my personal blog and recipients of this email list you’ve been aware that I was out of work for a year and a half before landing an IT job last July. That job ended abruptly last month. During that year and a half there was a bankruptcy and a near eviction, and in the process to save my apartment I entered into a settlement agreement with our landlord/management company to pay a certain amount each month over 11 months to catch up on the past due rent, attorney’s fees, etc.
With the recent loss of my job last month and the State of Florida denying my application for new unemployment benefits, I’ve not been able to continue paying under the settlement agreement, even though there is now only two months left to go. As a result, the landlord’s attorney is filing a notice of default, and unless the miraculous happens, Vondalee and I will be evicted from our apartment within days and out on the street (neither of us currently have an income and there’s no place else to go). My tax refund was seized by the State of Florida to pay child support for the adopted son I’ll never get to see again, so there’s literally nothing available to offer.
The only way that we have a chance to stay in our apartment (which, by the way, is $557 a month plus utilities, plus the $250 a month I was paying on the settlement agreement for the next couple more months) is to raise as much as we can within the next few days that we can offer the landlord’s attorneys in consideration for more time for me to find a job and complete payment of the settlement agreement and get back on our feet. There are other expenses as well such as internet connectivity and the electric bill that we need to catch up on so I can keep looking for work.
I know that many who read this list have the resources to help (I read your blogs daily; I know at least a few of you by name who are “raking it in”!), and I’m asking begging (yes, begging; I’ve more than lost my pride) to help keep us in our apartment and looking for work. I’ve put a PayPal button below (or if it doesn’t look right in your mailer you can use this link) to provide whatever you can.
I have a hard time believing that it could get so close to being back on our feet only to be slapped down again, so something has to happen. It just has to. There’s no “Plan B.” There’s no contingency plan. It’s all or nothing now, jump off and fly or crash. I’m out of options.
I really hate having to send a note like this to my updates list or post it to my personal blog, but I have no where else to go except to those who read what I post.
I thank you so much in advance and I hope that when we get back on our feet I can have the opportunity to pay it forward in the future to the next person that needs the same kind of help.
UPDATE 02/11/2011: As of this morning you all have helped with $430 toward the offer I was able to make to the landlord’s attorney; now we’re just waiting for their response. The more I can offer to them the better the chances we have. It looks like they want a payment now and more in a few weeks. This isn’t over yet.

The announcement came from the junior-high principal over the junior high school’s P.A. system while in Ms. Dunn’s English class.
Shortly thereafter, I was called with a few other students from the class to the principal’s office. Because there was a schoolteacher on the flight, the Times wanted the reactions of local students to what had just happened. We congregated in the assistant principal’s office, where a tiny black-and-white TV was tuned into the local news, replaying the explosion over and over again. We all realized that it was more than what was announced on the public address system.
After watching the story unfold on the tiny TV, we left the assistant principal’s office and the several of us sat down at a lunch table that was moved out to the middle of the quad for us, and we were interviewed by the Times as a group.
Our picture from the interview was on the front of the Orange County section of the Times the next morning.
The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth’ to ‘touch the face of God.’
